Meet Keynote Speaker
Since mastering the art of overcoming obstacles and achieving success through teamwork in adventure racing, firefighting, and business, award-winning keynote speaker Robyn Benincasa helps company leaders and teams connect, collaborate, and perform at their best.
“By far the best and most inspiring talk I have ever heard.”
–Edward Hayes, Director, Human Resources
Unlike most athletes, Robyn doesn’t solely rely on stories about her individual accomplishments.
Speaking with humor and humility, her deeply customized story-driven multimedia presentations inspire in business audiences the mindset and we-thinking culture they need to achieve collective success. She honed her team-building philosophy by depending on extreme teamwork as a 20+ year veteran firefighter and as a leader and teammate on adventure racing’s most prolific world champion teams.
A New York Times bestselling author, Robyn also leads The Project Athena Foundation, a nonprofit she founded to help survivors of medical or other traumatic setbacks create their big comeback stories through adventure and endurance sports, for which she was named a CNN Hero. Harvard Business Review has recognized Robyn as a Top 10 Speaker for her culture-shaping keynotes on leadership, teambuilding and peak performance. Her unique take on radical teamwork has profited countless teams at Fortune 500 companies—including Starbucks, Walmart, Boeing, Johnson & Johnson and Intel—leaving their audiences energized with practical tools and inspiration, knowing they have what it takes to persevere and prevail together.
“When you create a culture in which everyone values the team’s performance over their individual pride, that’s where the magic happens.”
– Robyn
“.. yours was one of the best, if not the best, keynote session I've seen in over two decades at my company."
– Vice President-Global Patient Outcomes and Real World Evidence
Why Robyn’s Take on Leadership and Teamwork is Relevant to Business Now
How do business audiences gain anything useful from someone whose job as an adventure racer involved wading through swamps and rappelling off cliffs?
The unexpected race context makes Robyn’s presentation unique, approachable and compelling. Most audiences have heard from business speakers and sports stars. Adventure racing allows your leaders and frontline employees to see teamwork and leadership in new ways with fresh eyes. She helps audiences realize that they’re actually all adventure racers: facing steep challenges, navigating uncharted terrain, forced to find a way forward or make one. When they see a team carry their injured teammate over a mountain, or a barefoot villager go to extreme lengths to help a team in need, they want to BE that kind of leader and teammate. They’re genuinely inspired, believing they can and want to do amazing things by embracing the power of human synergy.
“You are an amazing person. A true inspiration to all. We are all grateful that you were there to show us not only that it could be done, but how we—the mere mortals—could do it as well.”
- Oliver G. Santos, President
Top Takeaways on Leadership, Teamwork and Peak Performance
Leaders often quote Robyn, crediting her with helping them learn something new about teamwork and leadership. Here are a few takeaways they’ve reflected:
Robyn’s Back Story
Robyn’s Accidental Path to Becoming a Top 10 Keynote Speaker
Robyn began her career in pharmaceutical and hospital supply sales for Allergan, Baxter and Medline. Then she traded pantyhose and heels for boots and a helmet and became a full time San Diego firefighter!
Growing up, she competed in a variety of individual sports from gymnastics, diving, track and cross country in high school to springboard diving in college. When she moved to San Diego to start her sales career, she gravitated to Ironman Triathlons. After nine Ironmans (“I was like a Rottweiler competing with Greyhounds!” Robyn jokes), she was on a search for a sport with weight divisions :) and found judo, ultimately fighting on the U.S. team in international competitions.
After 25 years of competing in multiple individual sports, Robyn found the team sport of adventure racing. Finally, she’d discovered the sport she was meant to do! It showed her that consistent success was the natural byproduct when everyone left their egos at the start line and completely committed to doing whatever it took to achieve the TEAM’s mission.
After her adventure racing team won the Raid Gauloises World Championship in Ecuador, they were contacted by Fast Company magazine, who requested to interview her teammates for an article entitled “Extreme Teamwork.” The intent of the article was to help companies apply the winning strategies of Robyn’s team and other consistently high-performing extreme teams, , including NASA, Navy Seals, and George Lucas’s Light and Magic to their own fast-moving companies. Evidently, the article created a buzz; Fast Company asked if someone from the team could speak at their upcoming reader conference. And as Robyn remembers it, she “drew the short straw.” She spent a few days thinking about the keys to her teams’ consistent success and created a keynote entitled “The 8 Essential Elements of Human Synergy”—which just so happened to be the perfect acronym for TEAMWORK.
An introvert by nature, Robyn wasn’t too sure she ever wanted to undertake the adventure of speaking in front of people. Nervously, she presented “The Essential Elements of Human Synergy,” thinking this would just be a one-and-done experience, like skydiving. But the universe thought otherwise. After her presentation, a Zone VP from Starbucks came up to say hello. He told her that this exact message and culture was what he was trying to inspire in all his store managers. And Robyn suddenly found herself on a 15-city tour, inspiring managers to create exceptional experiences for their customers and teams through the power of a deep connection to one another and to the mission.
And the rest, as they say, is history. The speaking tour never really ended. And Robyn feels so incredibly fortunate to share with others the power of the we-thinking that helps us become great leaders in every aspect of our lives. “Roping up to others” is the fastest, most efficient and most effective route she’s found to experience the satisfaction of living your dreams while pursuing huge hairy goals. As Robyn puts it, “When we drop our ego and our fear of being judged, weak or wrong, we create room for superpowers like connection, curiosity and creativity, which allows us to climb higher together than any individual could ever rise alone.”
Project Athena
Supporting survivors to turn a setback into a life-affirming and life-changing comeback!
The Project Athena Foundation is a 501c3 nonprofit foundation dedicated to helping survivors of medical or other traumatic setbacks achieve their adventurous dreams.
You might know Robyn as a keynote speaker, longtime world champion adventure racer, 23- year veteran of the San Diego Fire Department and 10-time Ironman Finisher. But she’s also the proud owner of two bionic hips! After 20 years of endurance racing, Robyn was diagnosed with advanced osteoarthritis in both hips. After her first of six hip replacements, she decided to focus on what she COULD do instead of being devastated about what she couldn’t do. So she crutched across the beach, flopped into her kayak, and decided to become an ultra endurance kayaker. Robyn is now a three-time Guinness World Record holder for endurance paddling. She also holds the women’s course record for the longest non-stop paddling race in the world, the Missouri River 340. Her goal in founding The Project Athena Foundation was to help other women and men (aka Athenas and Zeuses!) turn their own life setbacks into amazing comeback stories through team-based endurance adventures.
Four times a year, Robyn invites people on an adventure to overcome trauma through teamwork. Adventures range from paddling and cycling 120 miles down all of the Florida Keys to hiking the Grand Canyon rim to rim to rim. Project Athena provides travel expenses, coaching, equipment and relentless encouragement to help people make the life-affirming transition from survivor to athlete. Whether you’re a survivor, donor or a fundraiser, we’d love for you to join the team for upcoming adventures. Robyn leads them all, so she’ll see you there!
